Operations research (OR) are an analytical method of problem-solving and decision-making that is useful in the management of organizations. In operations research, problems are broken down into basic components and then solved in defined steps by mathematical analysis. Analytical methods used in OR include mathematical logic, simulation, network analysis, queuing theory, and game theory . The process can be broadly broken down into three steps.

the main objective of Operations Research?

the goal of operations research is to arrive at optimal or near-optimal solutions to complex problems involving some form of decision making. The field originated in the military before World War 2, but has since expanded to explore a wide range of problems in all sorts of different industries.

OR frequently deals with some form of maximizing profit/performance or minimizing the loss/risk associated with some real world objective, but depending on the area of application and nature of the problem the specific goal(s) could involve a whole spectrum of criteria.
